Tinkering the Glitch: Cyberspace and Activism with the Coalition for Feminisms in Art Education Website (re)Design

Abstract

As preservice liaison and web developer of the National Art Education Association’s Coalition for Feminisms in Art Education (NAEA CFAE), I was tasked with a (re)design of the website as a hallmark of 50 years of history and official name change from Women’s Caucus to CFAE in 2023. This article provides emerging insights into a digital feminist tinkering methodology rooted in cyberfeminism and glitch feminist art education, to propose glitch feminist tinkering as a conduit for digital/internet activism in art education. I elaborate on the various tinker methods used in the (re)design of CFAE’s website, and analyze the impact of design qualities/processes like color and glitch, to emphasize a stronger focus on intergenerational collaboration through various digital interfaces and the arts. This essay is a visual tinkering reflection as a testament to new modalities of resistance within organizational work and towards a digital reformation of coalition-building.

  • Carly Sherman , The Pennsylvania State University

    Carly Sherman holds a B.A. and M.A. in Art Education from Kent State University and is a Dual-Title Ph.D. candidate in Art Education and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at Penn State University. Her research interests include intergenerational knowledge transfer and theorizing effective leadership praxes through storytelling and podcasting methodologies. Carly’s creative scholarship centers mixed media collage as a reflexive practice. She has presented nationally and internationally at the United States Society for Education Through Art, the National Art Education Association, and the National Women’s Studies Association. She has been recognized with the National Art Education Association’s Western Region Preservice Art Educator of the Year Award. Beyond her research, Carly contributes to the field through leadership roles with the Coalition for Feminisms in Art Education and the Ohio Art Education Association, advocating for feminist, culturally responsive, and socially engaged approaches in preservice art education.
